A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood

A recent film about TV presenter Fred Rogers.

Coming to cinemas today (at least in Switzerland) is a wonderful film about Fred Rogers, an icon of American children's TV. He has shaped generations of children and the adults they grew up to be, and educated and inspired them in an impactful way. The film is based mainly on an article written by journalist Lloyd Vogel (in real life Tom Junod), in which he expresses his experiences and encounters with the popular TV host.

Mr Rogers is not a famous or influential person in my country, so this film does not have the same connection it might hold for some people who grew up with him. I was mainly interested in it because of the first reviews I had read from the US, and the following nominations (Tom Hanks was nominated for both an Oscar and a Golden Globe). Having watched it, I can recommend it also to people who don't know Mr. Rogers at all (though ideally, you should enjoy watching Tom Hanks on the screen.)

The story of a journalist who interviews a famous person and gets to know him better is not unusual, but this story lives from the nature of its protagonist. Mr. Rogers leaves his mark on the people around him, and the journalist is no exception to that. Also the audience can feel the magic of this character, who was much more than an a TV host of a kids show. An uplifting and thought-provoking cinema experience.

(In various Swiss cinemas from today, e.g. Houdini, Kitag etc.)
