An African American author and activist (1924-1987).
Novelist and activist James Baldwin lived from 1924-1987; his work, however, is as alive as ever. In a time when African American rights are widely discussed and protested, he is often quoted. As a New Yorker, he experienced and documented a world in his work which dissects many of the problems African American men lived in then; and in 2020, his work is still insightful and important.

In recent years, his most popular novel has been If Beale Street Could Talk (1974), as it has recently been made into a wonderful movie by Barry Jenkins (director of Moonlight). It tells a tragic story of a young couple in Harlem, who are struggling to survive in their harsh world, despite their deep love for each other and will to create a life together.
Other notable works I would recommend are:
*Giovanni's Room (1956)
*Another Country (1962)
*Go Tell It on the Mountain (1953)
Especially his first novel, Go Tell It on the Mountain, is partly autobiographical, and gives insights into his own struggles. The topic of religion is very important, as his difficult stepfather was deeply religious, a fact that influenced the family strongly.
The two other mentioned works, Giovanni's Room and Another Country, are also notable for describing gay and bisexual relationships, as well as interracial relationships. Being gay himself, Baldwin knew of the difficulties this could lead to in society at the time, which is also visible in his writing; it was also a reason why he spent a lot of time in France where he felt less restricted.
Baldwin was active in the Civil Rights Movement and various other causes involving racial and sexual equality. He was an influential figure in New York, moving in a circle of writers, artists and activists from various backgrounds, including for example Toni Morrison and Marlon Brando. An inspiring figure, as his work shows until today.

Besides his novels, he also wrote many essays and plays. Some quotes from his various work are sometimes printed separately; a good collection can for example be found here. (30 James Baldwin Quotes to Bring you Closer to Humanity)
