A legendary cameraman and cinematographer.
Among film fans, Roger Deakins has long been considered one of the greatest cinematographers. Already 70 years old, he is still on top of his game. Having been involved in successful films, often for example with the Coen brothers, he has cemented his reputation with several masterpieces in the last decade.
The film Blade Runner 2049 (2017) by Denis Villeneuve (pictured above) is famous for its magnificent vision, including dystopian places and stunning colours. Deakins's craft is very visible here, and it finally earned his his first Oscar, after having been nominated 12 times before.
Since then, he has impressed film audiences with his camera work in 1917 (2019) by Sam Mendes, in which he has achieved the rare feat of filming in a way that is seems there are no cuts. This unusual technique creates the illusion that the spectator is there with the protagonists, and follows the action very closely. For this incredible achievement, he won his second Oscar.
In the following, here are my other favourite films with especially distinct cinematography by Roger Deakins.
Full list of featured films in this post (top to bottom):

There are of course many other great films in his long career, such as The Shawshank Redemption or The Reader. The chosen six are my favourites in terms of cinematography. Hopefully, a few more masterpieces will be added to his oeuvre.
