Romeo & Julia

A ballet production based on Shakespeare's play.

It's the weekend, and that means another great free streaming of a production of my favourite opera, Opernhaus Zürich. This week it's a ballet again, and a wonderful production at that. Romeo & Juliet is of course based on the famous play by William Shakespeare, and has the wonderful music by Sergei Prokofiev as an instrumental basis.

The choreography is by internationally renowned choreographer Christian Spuck, and was so successful that it has also been performed at other venues abroad.

List of dancers: Lucas Valente (Graf Capulet), Eva Dewaele (Gräfin Capulet), Katja Wünsche (Julia),

Tigran Mkrtchyan (Tybalt), William Moore (Romeo), Daniel Mulligan (Mercutio), Christopher Parker (Benvolio), Jan Casier (Paris), Filipe Portugal (Pater Lorenzo), Elena Vostrotina (Julias Amme)

Musical direction: Michail Jurowski

If you want to prepare for the ballet, it's of course a good idea to recap the story of the tragic lovers. Reading the entire play might be hard to achieve, but a summary will do as well.

Alternatively, one could rewatch a film adaptation, for example the 1996 adaptation by Baz Luhrman, starring Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio. Still wonderful to watch.
