An American feature film set in Hawaii (2011).
This film from 2011 has been stuck in my mind since it was released for many reasons. It's a touching family story, dealing with loss, growing up and facing harsh realities. Besides George Clooney's great performance as the father of the family, this was the breakout film by Shailene Woodley.
The filming location is Hawaii (several islands), and the depiction of both its beauty and lifestyle are amazing. The soundtrack is still something I listen to regularly as well, because it's so lovely. It also deals with topics important to the Hawaiian people, such as the preservation of its nature and the effects of tourism.
The Descendants won the Best Screenplay Oscar, and was nominated for five more, including George Clooney for his performance. He won a Golden Globe for it, and it also won Best Drama at the Golden Globes.
As it is George Clooney's birthday, I thought of his great performance here.
