An American feature film by Paul Thomas Anderson (2017).
In honour of Daniel Day-Lewis's birthday, I'm recommending one of my favourite films with him. He has of course been in many great productions in his long career, such as "Lincoln", "My Left Foot", or "Gangs of New York". One of his more recent films, which is a very elegant and enjoyable production, is "Phantom Thread" (2017) by director Paul Thomas Anderson. Anderson has been nominated for 8 Oscars (including 2 for "Phantom Thread") for both his screenwriting and directing, but has never won so far. Daniel Day-Lewis, who has already won 3 Oscars and 2 Golden Globes and countless other accolades, garnered a further nomination as well for this performance.
"Phantom Thread" is a very visual film as it is set in the fashion industry, as one can guess from the title. Daniel Day-Lewis plays a successful dressmaker in the 1950ies, who is used to getting his way. He lives with his sister Cyril (played wonderfully by Leslie Manville), but their quiet life changes when he meets a new muse. Much more than just a film about dressmaking, the clever writing by Anderson includes many unexpected twists and creates an atmosphere that is rather that of a psychological thriller than a romance. The beautiful cinematography and costumes make it come alive.
