A film based on a novel by British writer Julian Barnes (2011).
This film is based on a novel by Julian Barnes, so indirectly this is a book tip as well. I recently watched the adaptation for the first time and was pleasantly surprised. Its rather low rating might be a result of moviegoers who have not read the novel - in that case it might be a bit hard to understand. But if you're read the award-winning novel, or if you're in general not bothered by chronologically complex films, then this is a gem.

The films tells the story of an elderly man, who is divorced and about to become a grandfather. He seems rather satisfied with his life, but when he receives an unexpected inheritance from the mother of a former girlfriend, he starts to think about his past and realises that his memories might be incomplete or somehow twisted. This film connects past and present in an interesting way, and besides that is mainly so great because of its cast: Jim Broadbent, Charlotte Rampling and Harriet Walter are joined by supporting actors Michelle Dockery, Emily Mortimer and Matthew Goode, and some young rising actors such as Joe Alwyn.
