Jane Eyre

A theatrical performance of the novel Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, which has been filmed by National Theatre Live.

Jane Eyre has been one of my favourite novels for many, many years, and its film adaptations are numerous and wonderful. Currently there is a live performance from National Theatre Live streaming on YouTube, which is worth watching.

It's rather close to the original text, with only some necessary omissions to make the length theatre-fitting, and with the addition of some atmospheric music elements. As all theatres in London are closed, this is a way to share some of their art and at the same time raise money from donations.

Enjoy!

If you haven't read the novel, this is of course highly recommended. Written by Charlotte Bronte, it tells the story of a penniless orphan who is dependent on her aunt and then cast off to a harsh charity boarding school. Only when she takes up a position as a governess after reaching adulthood, she can find her independence and happiness, but her fate is taking a few more unexpected turns. A wonderful coming-of-age novel with a fierce heroine and some Gothic elements.

There are many editions on the market, the Penguin Clothbound Classics (on the right) is probably the most beautiful one. The chestnut pattern of course has a special significance...
